Aspect is a semantic category which can be examined from lexical and grammatical perspectives. This study investigates the lexical aspect of Lori Bakhtiari verbs based on Vendler’s (1957) framework and the tests proposed by Dowty (1979) and Jakendoff (1983), and aims to answer the following research questions: (1) Which factors influence the determination of grammatical aspect in Lori Bakhtiari? (2) How can the effect of context on aspectual shifts (aspectual modulation) be explained? The study employs a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through interviews with five native Lori Bakhtiari speakers Despite the adequacy of Dowty’s (1979) and Jakendoff’s (1983) tests, some predicates showed ambiguity or occasional overlap in their aspectual classification. The telicity and atelicity of verbs, as well as their aspectual behavior, depend on semantic, pragmatic, and syntactic context, and can lead to shifts in aspectual classification; therefore, telicity and atelicity should be regarded as features rather than as separate aspectual classes. Additionally, formal and semantic devices such as the auxiliary verb dâʃten, the prefix e-, and the adverb haj indicate the continuation of an action and, in some contexts, refer to its future occurrence or imminent realization. Even when the same predicate is used for different actions in Bakhtiari, the type of aspect plays a decisive role in identifying the kind of action. These findings underscore the necessity of a comprehensive, context-sensitive, and pragmatic approach in identifying and categorizing verb aspect in Lori Bakhtiari. Overall, the Bakhtiari aspectual system includes the three primary classes: stative, activity, and punctual.
