Abstract

Like other Iranian languages and dialects, Lari is a very important source in historical, sociological, and especially in linguistic studies. Lari language is a subset of southwestern Iranian languages and UNESCO identified it as one of the endangered languages in its Atlas of endangered languages. The present study is aimed at studying compound verbs in this language. The Corpus of this study has been collected from native speakers of this language and the author intuition of this article as a native speaker as well. The study sought to answer the following questions: What processes are involved in constructing a compound verb in the Lari language? What constituents are involved in making a compound verb in this language? Constructing compound verb in this language is a morphological process or a syntactic? By carry out this study in a descriptive-analytic framework, the results of this study show that compound verb construction in Lari is a lexical/morphological process because it is not head-to-head movement and some functional categories including adverbs and pronouns combine with simple verbs and make compound verbs. Two compound verb formation processes are classified under two general categories: "combination" and "incorporation". The domain of incorporation in Lari is extensive & it includes the combination of adjective + noun, noun + verb, proposition + verb, adjunct + verb, and pronoun + verb, but there are only two kinds of incorporations: the direct object incorporation and indirect object incorporation.
